Kuu Bistro – Amazing Japanese Izakaya

Kuu Bistro is a new Japanese Izakaya in downtown Montreal. They have the Japanese tapas style dishes, sushi rolls, and oysters.

A bit different from Imadake, the decor is very airy and bright with floor to ceiling windows looking out into Square Philippe. There’s also a second floor that can be a great private party venue.

The food is absolutely fresh and delicious. My favorite dishes would be the white fish carpaccio, and grilled miso black cod. The white fish carpaccio is lightly grilled on the outside and dipped in a rich sauce with different spices. I’ve always loved black cod. It’s a slightly fattier fish and the miso complement the taste very well.

For people who like sushi rolls ,they also have a fairly large selection of makis to choose from. Kuu lollipop is wrapped with cucumbers, very refreshing with tasty sauce to go with it.

They have different types of oysters on the menu as well, which is pretty rare for Japanese restaurants in Montreal.

I’ll definitely go back to sample the other half of the menu!

Kyo Bar Japonais

Kyo Bar Japonais is an Izakaya located in old Montreal, one of the most touristy corners under Place d’Armes hotel. Considering the location, I would say their price is actually reasonable.

In my most recent visit, I got to try both tapas and sushi from them. The ingredients are fresh, and presentations are nice. But I’d say their tapas leaves a stronger impression than sushi.

Grilled black cod is one of my favorite things on izakaya menus. This one is also quite good! The rich taste of black cod mixed with miso is a perfect combination. I even ate the slightly crispy skin.

Out of curiosity, I ordered the sparkling sake. It turns out to taste like sake mixed with sparkling water… Nothing special…

Braised pork belly is fatty pieces of pork. It’s not as greasy when eaten with the salade at the bottom of the bowl. It may be a bit too much if I had a whole bowl of it. But just a couple pieces is perfect for enjoyment.

Their sashimi pieces are surprisingly large and thick cuts. No complaints as the fish is fresh and tasty!

I can’t really taste the green apple in sake tataki, probably because the sweetness is a lot less noticeable when eaten together with the salmon roe. But overall this tastes like another plate of sashimi with condiments because the salmon is not really seared.

Rainbow maki has a satisfying amount of fish in it. However, it’s less impressive compared to the rest of the dishes. Probably because it doesn’t have a burst of flavor like the other options. But it’s still quite good for filling up my stomach to finish up a meal.
