Mimi La Nuit – New Bar & Restaurant in Old Montreal

Mimi La Nuit is a new bar & restaurant opened at the old location of Le Piano Rouge. The whole place is renovated is a very cool spot to spend a night. It’s mainly a bar with delicious cocktails and nice wine selection. Even though food is not their main focus, the few dishes we have tried are innovative and delicious. The portions are bigger than I have expected as well!

Mimi La Nuit - Oysters with Vodka!

Mimi La Nuit – Oysters
with Vodka!

Their oysters are served with tiny squeeze bottles of vodka (yes, it’s real vodka! Not as strong as your regular shots but you can definitely feel the drops you put on the oyster), fresh lemon juice and home made hot sauce. There’s also a sauce that you can serve with the little lime slice spoons. Very cute!

Mimi La Nuit - Lamb Collar Taco

Mimi La Nuit – Lamb Collar Taco

The lamb collar taco is probably my favorite. It’s served with chucks of lamb, sauce which tastes like mustard based, coleslaw and soft warm tortillas. I enjoyed the process of assembling my own tacos. The lamb meat fell off the bone and the coleslaw really brought out the taste of the whole dish.

If you are looking for a nice night out in Old Montreal, I’d definitely recommend a visit to Mimi La Nuit. They are in the process of renovating the second floor as well and it will be a dance floor/event venue. Look forward to that! 🙂

Communion – MTL à TABLE visit

Communion is another great restaurant in Old Montreal that we have visited during MTL a Table. The ingredients are seasonal and fresh, the taste in many cases is flavorful but still light.

Entree

My favorite is the beet salad. It’s simple and refreshing. The candied pecans added crunchiness to the whole plate and the sweet taste complements the beets quite well.

Main Course

The winner for me is definitely the scallop! The scallops are seared to perfection. The hint of coffee in the sauce really is delicious. And the wild mushrooms are just amazing!

The second would be the braised beef macreuse. The meat melts in the mouth and the portion is quite big as well.

Dessert

Compared to the rest of the meals, the dessert didn’t stand out. The chocolate mousse had a bit too much cream on top. And the crustade aux pommes wasn’t really special.

Overall, I still like Communion for its fresh and flavorful French food even though the dessert selection during the event wasn’t quite satisfying. I’d go back just for the scallop. 🙂

Helena – MTL à TABLE visit

I went back to Helena during MTL à TABLE and this time was even better than the lunch special! The presentation of the food is just so beautiful. The taste is delicious and the food is just the right portion for us.

The grilled octopus is very tender and reminded me of Greek grilled octopus. Super good! That’s my favorite appetizer.

Speaking of Portuguese dessert, most people will think of natas. Helena’s version is cute and sweet. And the chocolate crumbs are surprisingly delicious too! Not just a useless decoration. 🙂

Osteria Venti – Fine Italian Cuisine in Old Montreal

Venti Osteria is a fine Italian restaurant located in Old Montreal. It serves up delicious and slightly pricy food. But the overall atmosphere is warm and welcome. And the food is amazing! I’ve always been skeptical about expensive Italian food because I don’t think they are that much different from each other. But Venti Osteria truly blew my mind!

We went during Montreal a Table event and tried their $39 table d’hôte menu.

The tuna is super delicious! All the ingredients added to the flavor of the tuna and the acidity of the olives is perfect with the fish. This is probably my favorite dish of the night.

Veal tail is a bit exotic for me. I feel it’s lacking a little bit of flavor. But the tail is cooked very well and melt in the mouth.

Rosewood – Bar & Restaurant with Rock & Roll

Rosewood is a new bar & restaurant in old Montreal, right next to Joverse. The menu is actually quite relaxed with mostly burgers, chicken wings and salad. It’s something I can enjoy in T-shirt and jeans. But probably due to the location, most of the guests are still dressed quite well, maybe too well for picking up burgers and bite into them with full force.

I tried the Rosewood BBQ chicken wings, and watermelon spritz. Nothing to write home about, but good enough to make me lick the fingers.

Rosewood - chicken wings

Rosewood – chicken wings

The most impressive part of Rosewood is definitely the music! The owner is rock star Jonas Tomalty, from Montreal. And the playlist ranges from classic rock to contemporary hits. We were sitting in our seats and amazed with the wonderful music! Too bad they don’t have a dance floor. 😦 We were itching to groove to the beats! (It might be the cocktail talking.)

The music is a bit loud and you’ll need to yell a bit for your friends to hear you. But it’s great if you are not in there for sophisticated conversations and just want to enjoy some rock music and a drink. Their bar selection is quite extensive and I’m sure you can find what you fancy!

Helena – Fine Portuguese Cuisine

Helena is a fine Portuguese restaurant located on McGill street in old Montreal. To be honest, I’ve never tried fine Portuguese food. My impression of Portuguese food is mostly Piri Piri chicken (which is delicious, btw!).

I went for lunch special. Table d’hôte at $22 is a pretty good deal! Especially considering a regular main dish is around $30-40 in the restaurant. However, it would be a good idea to prepare for an extra long lunch break because it does take a while to get the food.

To start up, the restaurant is beautifully decorated with lots of light. The bread is served in little white bags with the restaurant’s logo on them. A little detail but very cute and thoughtful.

I chose Caldo Verde as the appetizer. The taste is quite light and we had to ask for some salt and pepper. It seems to be the case for the rest of the meal. The flavor of the dish is not very salty or strong, to emphasize on the freshness of the ingredients.

The roasted halibut is cooked just right. It’s also a bit light in taste. So we were happy to add a bit fleur de sel that was provided by the waiter.

Kyo Bar Japonais

Kyo Bar Japonais is an Izakaya located in old Montreal, one of the most touristy corners under Place d’Armes hotel. Considering the location, I would say their price is actually reasonable.

In my most recent visit, I got to try both tapas and sushi from them. The ingredients are fresh, and presentations are nice. But I’d say their tapas leaves a stronger impression than sushi.

Grilled black cod is one of my favorite things on izakaya menus. This one is also quite good! The rich taste of black cod mixed with miso is a perfect combination. I even ate the slightly crispy skin.

Out of curiosity, I ordered the sparkling sake. It turns out to taste like sake mixed with sparkling water… Nothing special…

Braised pork belly is fatty pieces of pork. It’s not as greasy when eaten with the salade at the bottom of the bowl. It may be a bit too much if I had a whole bowl of it. But just a couple pieces is perfect for enjoyment.

Their sashimi pieces are surprisingly large and thick cuts. No complaints as the fish is fresh and tasty!

I can’t really taste the green apple in sake tataki, probably because the sweetness is a lot less noticeable when eaten together with the salmon roe. But overall this tastes like another plate of sashimi with condiments because the salmon is not really seared.

Rainbow maki has a satisfying amount of fish in it. However, it’s less impressive compared to the rest of the dishes. Probably because it doesn’t have a burst of flavor like the other options. But it’s still quite good for filling up my stomach to finish up a meal.
